== Flag raising on Mount Suribachi == As a member of the patrol that seized the summit of Mount Suribachi, Lindberg helped tie the first flag to a length of Japanese pipe and raise it at about 10:30 a.m. on February 23, 1945. When the larger second flag was raised and photographed by Joe Rosenthal a short time later, Lindberg was below the summit reloading his flamethrower. He was awarded the Silver Star for his actions on the island.
