Our Mission

Our Mission

The Iwo Jima Association of America (IJAA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit public charity dedicated to preserving, commemorating and perpetuating the history and legacy of the Battles for Iwo Jima and Pacific Islands, and the veterans who fought.

IJAA is committed to this dedication through the promotion of historical and scholarly study of the battles for Iwo Jima and other Pacific Islands by educating veterans, their descendants, students, academia, and the general public. To that end, programs are comprised of educational symposia, tours of Guam Battlefields and other Pacific Islands, and a Joint Japanese/American Reunion of Honor Commemorative Memorial service on Iwo Jima. And an educational outreach program on the historic Pacific Campaigns.

The core mission of the IJAA is to:

  • Preserve and commemorate the history of the Battles for Iwo Jima and other Pacific Islands.

  • Honor the veterans who served and sacrificed during these battles.

  • Educate future generations about this pivotal chapter in history.

To achieve this, the organization engages in educational programming, historical research, and outreach to veterans, their families, students, historians, and the public.

Activities and Programs

The IJAA sponsors a range of initiatives, including:

  • Tours — Organized trips to Guam and other Pacific battlefields, attend a Memorial Service on Iwo Jima.

  • Outreach and publications — such as Black Sands, the association’s Annual Journal aimed at preserving and disseminating historical content.

  • Reunion events — like the annual Anniversary Reunion Symposia in Arlington, VA in February, Guam March and the Reunion of Honor on Iwo Jima, where surviving veterans, family members, historians, and supporters gather to remember and pay respects.
